W0950450

How I recovered radio sonde W0950450 launched from Larkhill (UK)

Help from a local man

Nothing had landed near me for a while and in the recent hot weather a few had started to land nearby.

I watched this one online as long as I could because it looked like it was going to land in woodland. I was the last station to receive a signal and it appeared to land in a clearing with tall trees all around. I persuaded my wife to drive me to the location.

When we arrived near the location, it looked like there was a road right up to the landing point, however, after a short walk, it became apparent that the area was under development and locked behind a large building site gate. We went for plan B and drove a litle further on and I walked along a track to see if I could get nearer. There were lots of houses that backed onto the clearing but no public path I could use.

At the end of the track I met a very helpful man. I explained what I was doing and he even tried to phone a couple of his neighbours to see if they could give me access to the clearing. That did not work so he advised me to go back the the locked gate as you could walk right past it to the right of the gate.

Plan C, or maybe back to plan A, depending on your opinion. After driving back to our original location, I walked to the right of the gate and then behind it. From there it was a simple task to follow the GPS for a few hundred metres to find the sonde.

The radio sonde was swinging from a tree less than a metre from the ground.

The nylon tether went over a very tall tree, then all the way to the ground where the parachute could be found.

After recovery of the radio sonde and the parachute, we drove back up the track to the to see the helpful man. He had been so helpful I gave him the radio sonde

The track of this radio sonde is recoded on radiosondy.info.
